Know Your Engine Before You Diagnose Anything
Before you start chasing a problem, it helps to know what you're actually looking at. Whether it's bolted to a push mower, a generator, a pressure washer, or a go-kart, almost every small 4-stroke engine relies on the same handful of parts to run. Get familiar with these and the rest of this guide will make a lot more sense.
Small Engine Won't Start (The Most Common Issue)
A small engine that won't start is almost never a sign it's worn out — it's nearly always one of four simple things. Whether it's on a mower, generator, pressure washer, or kart, check these in order before you touch anything mechanical.
- 01 Is the gas old? Anything that's been sitting more than ~30 days starts to break down and can gum up the carburetor, and stale fuel is the single biggest reason small engines won't start. Drain it and run fresh fuel if you're not sure how old it is
- 02 Is the fuel valve or petcock turned ON? Not every engine has one, but on the ones that do, it's the single most common reason a fine engine suddenly "won't start."
- 03 Does the carb bowl actually have fuel in it? Tip the engine slightly or loosen the bowl drain screw to check.
- 04 Are you using the right cold-start method? Most engines use a choke lever, but some — many Briggs & Stratton and Tecumseh engines, for example — use a primer bulb instead. Using the wrong one, or skipping it, is an easy reason for a no-start
- 01 Pull the plug and check for spark. Ground it against bare metal on the engine while a helper pulls the cord, and look for a clean blue spark.
- 02 Not sure what you're seeing? Just replace the spark plug. It's a couple of dollars and one of the most common no-start causes on any small engine.
- 01 Check the air filter for dirt, oil saturation, or clogging. A packed or soaked filter can choke the engine before it ever fires.
- 02 Try starting it briefly with the filter removed. If it fires right up, the filter is your problem — clean or replace it.
- 01 Make sure the kill switch isn't grounding the ignition. A stuck, wet, or miswired kill switch will block spark completely with no other symptoms
- 02 Wiggle the kill switch wire and connector while attempting to start, in case there's a loose or corroded connection.
- 03 If it's a push mower, the safety bail handle has to be held against the upper handlebar the entire time, or the engine won't fire — and riding mowers or generators with seat, PTO, or low-oil shutdown switches need those satisfied too.
Engine Starts, Then Dies — or Surges
If your engine fires up but dies seconds later, surges up and down at idle, or only stays running with the choke on, you're looking at a carburetor problem almost every time.
- 01 Remove the float bowl from the bottom of the carburetor.
- 02 Clean the main jet. Spray it out with carb cleaner and clear it with compressed air. Never poke it with a wire or drill bit — that enlarges the hole and ruins the jet's calibration
- 03 Spray carb cleaner through every passage you can reach, including the idle circuit, not just the main jet.
- 01 If your tank has a vented gas cap, take it off and see if the engine runs better. An engine that dies again after running fine for 5-15 minutes is a classic sign of a clogged vent creating a vacuum in the tank.
- 02 That pinhole vent can get gummed up with old fuel residue, or simply sealed over after a repaint. Clear it with a pin or replace the cap if it's blocked.
Engine Backfires or Pops
Backfires and pops on a small engine usually trace back to running too lean, an exhaust leak pulling outside air into the system, or the governor and throttle linkage snapping shut too abruptly.
Recheck your carb tuning before anything else. Tighten the exhaust bolts and inspect the muffler gasket for leaks. If the linkage is snapping shut hard, check the governor spring and throttle return spring for the right tension.
Engine Smokes? Use the Color to Diagnose It
Smoke color tells you almost everything you need to know before you even open the engine up.

Check your oil level before anything else — an overfilled crankcase is a very common beginner mistake and it causes blue smoke almost every time. If the level looks right, move on to checking whether the carb is running rich.
Engine Runs, But Has No Power
An engine that idles fine but goes flat under load usually points to one of five things: the governor limiting RPM more than it should, a dirty carburetor, low compression, a throttle that isn't opening all the way, or — easy to overlook — blocked cooling fins or a clogged flywheel screen causing the engine to overheat and lose power. Work through them in that order, easiest to check to most involved.
