How Speed is Calculated

Top speed is calculated using engine RPM, tire diameter in inches, and overall gear ratio. The formula is: Speed (mph) = (RPM x Tire Diameter) / (Gear Ratio x 336). Larger tires and lower gear ratios increase top speed. Higher RPM engines will also push more speed for the same setup.

Tips for Getting Accurate Results

Use the actual tire diameter, not the rim size. Measure the tire from ground to top while it is inflated and under load if possible. Your gear ratio should be the final drive ratio — rear teeth divided by front teeth (or use our Gear Ratio Calculator first).

People Also Ask

How fast can a go-kart go?

Recreational go-karts typically reach 20-35 mph. Racing karts with larger engines and tuned setups can exceed 60-80 mph depending on gearing and track conditions.

How do I increase my go-kart's top speed?

Lower the gear ratio (smaller rear sprocket or larger front sprocket), increase engine RPM, or use a slightly larger tire diameter.

What tire diameter should I enter?

Measure the outside diameter of the tire in inches. Common go-kart tires range from 10 to 13 inches in diameter.

Does gear ratio affect top speed?

Yes. A lower ratio (like 4:1 vs 6:1) significantly increases top speed at the cost of acceleration and low-end torque.
